On Tuesday, August 23, 2011, an earthquake registering 5.8 on the Richter scale occurred 84 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., damaging the Washington Monument. The National Park Service has temporarily closed the Monument and is assessing the damage to it. This footage was recorded just prior to and during the quake.
Here the ranger guides visitors down the stairs as per protocol. The ranger then returns to the 500 foot level to ensure that all visitors have been escorted out.
