Johnny Boy (De Niro) enters the bar... in this scene, the lighting is dim and hazy. Instantly, it reminds me of places that are mature, seedy, or dangerous. Places like these include run-down bars, strip clubs, or apartments. Also, the color red is visually dominant. To me, red evokes feelings of violence, passion, and unsteadiness. I've seen many films that have used the color red in order to transform these feelings into symbolic themes, especially for crime films such as "Mean Streets."
